Stage 4 Mesothelioma Treatment Options

Stage 4 Mesothelioma is the final stage of this cancer and there is hardly any treatment to cure this disease at this stage. The cancer has already spread to the other internal organs of the body. The cancer tumors cannot be operated at this stage.

Stage four mesothelioma cancer symptoms become difficult for doctors to carry out medical procedures. Surgery is completely ruled out at this stage hence, the patient’s treatment alternatives become limited. The only treatment for the patient at this stage is palliative. Doctors try to relieve the pain of the patient and to improve his or her quality of life. There is no more curative treatment at this stage.  

  1. Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is done to the patient to reduce the size of the tumors so that their growth is slowed down. This can be done by giving pills or by an IV. The drugs used for chemotherapy at this stage are Cisplatin and Alimta. By using these drugs the patient can survive for above a year. Chemotherapy is not curative but it assists the patient to survive a bit longer.

  1. Radiation

Radiation is used to reduce the size of the tumors and to destroy mesothelioma cells. Radiation is done in different ways depending on the tumor locations. In the final stage, radiation relieves the patient from tumor pains. This procedure also assists the patient by improving his or her breathing and helps the victim to manage other side effects. Radiation is not a curative treatment for the disease rather it is a palliative method. It gives relieve to the patient.

  1. Palliative Surgery

Palliative surgery at this stage improves the quality of life of the patient and it helps in reducing the symptoms. It can also improve the life expectancy of the patient. A person suffering from pleural mesothelioma or from peritoneal mesothelioma can be treated effectively by palliative surgery and his or her life expectancy will increase. This procedure helps in reducing fluid increase.

  1. Clinical Trials

Doctors nowadays also conduct clinical trials on a patient suffering from mesothelioma together with the regular treatment, such as immunotherapy.
